A HOME ON THE DEEP, Or, The Mariner's Trials On the Dark Blue Sea. By a Son of the Ocean. Published in 1857 by Higgins, Bradley & Dayton, Boston. Rebound, text and illustrations fully intact. Text is clean and complete, light foxing, narrow moisture blemish in upper margin of some pages. No torn, loose or missing pages.

This is a rare collection of old-time sea stories, true incidents and adventures (mostly) passed down from old salts to new, told aboard sailing ships on oceans the world over. Accounts of shipwrecks, pirates, survival at sea, mutinies, whaling, fishing, famous (now forgotten) naval episodes, and more. The object of the present volume has been to afford a series of brief and interesting sketches, which might be both useful and attractive to the seaman, and afford a convenient pastime for his leisure moments. It was believed that a miscellany of the kind, which by its variety might not readily tire, and which might be laid down and resumed at frequent intervals, without losing its interest, would not be unacceptable to the intelligent mariner.

This work was published to be instructive as well as entertaining to seamen. It embraces nearly every subject of importance in the history of navigation and maritime discoveries, while the sketches of nautical manners and adventure are from the most authentic sources.

The publishers also hoped that from the stories presented, it would be shown what astonishing advantage are the virtues of decision, temperance, perseverance, and unwavering hope, in moments of extreme peril and despair. To transient passengers across the deep, the publishers hoped that the volume will not be an uninteresting and unsought-for companion; while to that very respectable class of persons who live on shore, it will be found to present an ample and genuine representation of the habits and excitements, the pleasures and perils of a mariners life.

Get ready, because here come some unforgettable accounts illustrating the perils and beauties of the deep, along with graphic accounts of the most popular voyages on record. A HOME ON THE DEEP is also embellished with a series of beautiful period engravings depicting scenes from the text. Ferocity of the Polar Bear. Fishing on the Grand Bank.

A Tale of the Sea. Voyage From Halifax to Bermuda. Famine on Board the Le Jacques. An Escape Through Cabin Windows.

Shipwrecked Mariners Saved Through a Dream. Feelings Excited by a Long Voyage.

The Loss of the Phoenix. Bird Catching in the Shetland Islands.

Dangers of a Nova Scotia Fog. An Account of the Whale Fishery.

The Loss of the Peggy. The Main Truck, or a Leap for Life. Naval Battles of the United States.
